vbPortal marks the first new major version of vbPortal in over
two years. Besides a significant number of new features, there is
also a number of major developments in the underlying system
architecture. Along with these advances, however, came a system that
incorporated a tremendous amount of new and then not-widely-tested
code. Compared to the then existing line of 2.x releases, the first
few beta releases had minor regressions in areas of stability,
performance, and occasionally functionality. For those reasons, the
Development Team specifically discouraged some users from updating
older vbPortal 2.x releases to 3.x beta releases unless they where
aware of and prepared to deal with possible regressions in the beta
packages. While we believed that many initial problems with stability
had been fixed, some functionality was still being addressed by
works-in-progress. Specifically, for more conservative users, we had
recommended running 2.x releases (such as 2.x_Release_Candidate_2)
during the beta phase. We felt that such users where probably best
served upgrading to 3.x only after a 3.x_Release_Candidate had been
created; this happened a short time after 3.x_Beta_6. It is common
knowledge that vbPortal 3.0.0 was stable since beta 3 and subsequent
beta releases not only addressed bugs or issues but also added more
features and functionality. However, rather than say that vbPortal
was gold early in this year and then fix bugs, it was decided to
release a series of beta versions first to give the code a chance to
mature and also to give premium members an opportunity to familiarise
themselves with new features and techniques found only in vbPortal
3.0.0 for vBulletin 3.0.x.
